Brake rotors resurfaced?

Hello, I have a 2006 Prerunner and the brake pads will need to be replaced in the near future. Do I need to replace the rotors or can I resurface them? There might not be a way to do this but also how do I tell if it is time to replace them or if they are still good while I am in there?
